We believe that children in Preschool are unique individuals with their very own needs, rates of development, temperament, and method of learning. Children learn best through interacting with their environment, people, and materials. Our outstanding natural environment allows ample room for running, relaxing, and reflecting. We offer many opportunities to explore, manipulate, discover, observe, reflect, experiment, and question, so that children can create new conclusions and new knowledge. By attempting, practicing, and developing new skills, children develop competence and a positive concept. They are allowed to feel the full range of emotions, so they understand and respect themselves and others, and develop self-confidence and resilience.
Our curriculum exposes children to a variety of cultural experiences, traditions, and customs that encourage them to learn and celebrate both the differences and similarities between and among people all over the world. Our program also focuses on the following:
- Language, Literacy & Communication Skills: A variety of hands-on activities and materials advance basic language, communication, and literacy by encouraging the growth of oral and expressive language.
- Math Concepts and Skills: The use of manipulatives encourage the development of basic logical and mathematical concepts (as many as, more than, less than, all and some, and whole and part), and those skills necessary for sorting, classifying, counting, solving, sequencing, and working with space and shapes.
- Science Concepts and Skills: The development of basic scientific skills is achieved through activities focusing on observation, exploration, investigation, description, comparison, prediction, and the use of tools.
- Personal and Social Development Skills: We encourage activities that require following one and two step oral directions, cooperation, control of self, listening skills, and group interaction, as well as problem solving with peers and adults. At the same time, we help the children develop self help, pride in own work, effort, and the verbalization of feelings and personal needs to promote participation, friendship, care, love, and respect towards all living things and materials.
- Art Skills: Using diverse materials and techniques, we promote creativity through the arts while we help students develop skills in eye-hand coordination, listening and responding to music and songs, painting, cutting, gluing, drawing, sculpting, beading, and dramatizing.
- Physical Skills: Through a variety of activities and materials, children develop small and large motor skills, as well as teamwork. Examples include play dough, gluing, drawing, tracing, copying, cutting and outdoor play such as bouncing, catching and throwing balls, running, skipping, jumping, etc.
There is a credentialed teacher and teaching assistant for both the Preschool and Pre Kindergarten classes and a playground that is specifically designated and uniquely equipped for their use.
